With only marginal exceptions, everyone in Gaza is sick, injured, or both. This includes every national aid worker, every international volunteer, and probably every Israeli hostage: every man, woman, and child.

Virtually every child under the age of five whom we encountered, both inside and outside of the hospital, had both a cough and watery diarrhea. We found cases of jaundice (indicating hepatitis A infection under such conditions) in nearly every room of the hospitals in which we served, and in many of our healthcare colleagues in Gaza.

Malnutrition led to widespread spontaneous abortions, underweight newborns, and an inability of new mothers to breastfeed. This left their newborns at high risk of death given the lack of access to potable water anywhere in Gaza. Many of those infants died. In Gaza we watched malnourished mothers feed their underweight newborns infant formula made with poisonous water. We can never forget that the world abandoned these innocent women and babies.

The math of blood quantum is straight-forward.

Suppose a tribe has 1,000 enrolled citizens. Let’s assume they are all full-blood for starters, but half the children born are mixed – their other parent either from another tribe or non-Native. Continuing this, after seven generations, 2% will be full-blood, 9% will be half, 23% will be quarter, 31% will be 1/8th, 23% will be 1/16th, and 11% will be less than that. You can see where this going. By the eighth generation, half the tribe will be less than 1/8th. It’s a recipe for what the white man called “extermination.”

Many are quick to note that the song itself wasn’t designed to be a patriotic anthem. Famous folk singer Woody Guthrie wrote “This Land is Your Land” in the 1940s as a sarcastic retort to Irving Berlin's classic "God Bless America,” that he felt was overplayed at the time. The original song included more critical lyrics that have been lost across the decades – and even more radical verses that were never released – juxtaposing farmers’ struggles, depicting struggles of toiling farmers, poverty, hunger, and land disenfranchisement (NPR). But today, only the sanitized versions remain, often sung alongside “God Bless America” or other patriotic songs at large events.

But, as Raye Zaragoza, a singer, songwriter, and podcaster of Indigenous descent, emphasizes, there’s a difference between impact and intent. Guthrie may not have intended for this song to come off as an anthem for colonization, but that’s exactly how it’s being used today. “As a songwriter,” she explains, “I can’t imagine how it would feel if someone chopped up my song, but that’s the impact.”

Krasimir Karakachanov, Bulgaria’s Deputy Prime Minister for public order is the head of the right-wing Bulgarian National Movement. Earlier this year, he declared: “The truth is that we need to undertake a complete programme for a solution to the Gypsy problem.”

He has developed a “concept for the integration of the unsocialised Gypsy (Roma) ethnicity”, which defines Roma as the Nazis did, as “asocial gypsies” and “non-native Europeans”.

He wants to set up compulsory “labour education schools” for Roma children, limit the number of children born to Roma women and send some community members on work programmes. His party has also called for “reservations” for Roma people, suggesting, grotesquely, that they could become tourist attractions. Karakachanov’s programme could soon become law.
